Rampage 08, minutes after the start in Tai Tam

Four Peaks

Another great Four Peaks Race has just been completed. Over the last 40 years, guys and gals have been sailing between, and running up, four of Hong Kong’s highest mountains. It brings out the best in sailors and runners and this year lived up to its reputation.

Cast of thousands on Wild Card

Thirteen boats set off from Tai Tam Bay on Saturday morning, headed for Lantau and the challenging, 934-metre high Lantau Peak. From there it was Mount Stenhouse on Lamma Island, climbed in the dark! Next was a dash to Hong Kong Island and up Violet Hill. Sounds easy, but it isn’t, and neither are the vital pick-up points of the runners when they come down.

Ma On Shan done, paddling back to the boat

The last, and probably the most difficult, leg is sailing up to Sai Kung and landing runners at the police pier, the country park headland or, from the middle of Port Shelter! Yes, some runners paddled for more than a kilometer to land their kayaks, and ascend Ma On Shan.

This year, the leaders enjoyed fantastic winds. Wild Card reported a gust of 35 knots off Stanley. All boats finished on Sunday afternoon and everyone is looking forward to the prize-giving on Friday, the 23rd . . . and the final results!
